“If we saw the words, ‘Yesterday five more women and two children died because of domestic violence’ in the headlines of the local paper every day, maybe people would care more about what happened to the victims.”

This project, begun in Fall 2007, attempts to take mainstream news articles and illustrate the truth buried in them: domestic violence and sexual assault are an epidemic in this country, and the product of a misogynistic society intent on victim-blaming.

Post headlines have been created to tell the truth about the stories attached, though the original headlines have been included with links to the original stories. Comment content posted here is either directly from articles or flagged as contributor commentary. Pertinent details have been lifted out, brought to the fore, and/or highlighted to demonstrate the unreality of mainstream news coverage of DV and SA.

All events are real, as are the women and children subject to the brutality they portray. These stories are pulled from major metropolitan areas around the country at least once a week. Due to limits on time, not all areas are covered, and a project that attempted to cover every news article that failed to note the underlying violent cause would be a full-time job for more than one person.
